Antonio pagkaraan ng kanyang Hagkis ng Talahib (1980) at Pagsalubong sa Habagat (1986) na nagpapakita ng kanyang pagiging primera klaseng makata. Tumanggap siya ng maraming gawad sa pagsulat ng tula at kuwento, kabilang dito ang Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, Grand Prize sa Epic Narrative ng Cultural Center of the Philippines Literary Competition, Talaang Ginto sa Tula, at National Book Award ng Manila Critics Circle. Panapanahong nahihilig sa pagdidiyaryo at pagsusulat ng dulang pampelikula at pantelebisyon, pinamatnugutan niya ang Diyaryo Filipino at iba pang magasin at iniskrip ang Insiang, kauna unahang pelikulang Pilipinong itinanghal sa Cannes Film Festival. Editor siya ngayon ng Pilosopong Tasyo newsmagazine.
