Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient Greece where it honored Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. As Christianity spread throughout Europe, the celebration came to honor “Mother Church”. Later it was combined with the Mothering Sunday celebration to recognize both mother's and the church. In 1907, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in the United States, and by 1914 it had become an official holiday to be held annually on the second Sunday of May.
