Volume 1

Noel (Piolo Pascual) and Melanie (Claudine Barretto) are siblings but are not related by blood. The petty quarrels turn into adoloscent issue as well. The situation is not helped by Ariston's favoritism of Melanie over his own son. But this is balanced by the unusual dedication showered by the family nanny, Ceding (Amy Austria), on Noel. A major conflict drives Noel to continue his studies in Australia. Will distance help the siblings miss each other? Will they realize the old adage that hatred is really the brother of love?

Noel (Piolo Pascual) figures in a car accident that makes the whole family rush to his side. As Melanie (Claudine Barretto) takes care of her brother, they finally admit they love each other. But their parents are deadset against their relationship. Meanwhile, Ceding (Amy Austria) admits to Agnes (Dina Bonnevie) that Noel is her son born out of wedlock with Ariston's father. This makes Ariston (Edu Manzano) and Noel half-brothers, not father and son. As Noel and Melanie nurture their relationship, Cynthia (Jodi Sta Maria) tries a drastic measure in an attempt to gain Noel's undivided attention. Meanwhile, it looks like Ariston is ready to reveal the truth of the real nature of his relationship with Noel but an accident derails it. Melanie sees the death of their parents as punishment for her illicit love affair with Noel and she breaks off with him. But they remain a family as Noel is appointed her legal guardian. Melanie graduates with honors but another misunderstanding during her graduation party results in an impulsive decision to marry Ronald (Bobby Andrews). How will this new development affect Noel and Melanie's relationship?

Though moving on towards separate paths as what they believe is for the best, Noel and Melanie like real soul mates, end up sharing almost the same ordeal--- an unhappy marriage. They find refuge in their friendship amidst difficulties with their respective spouses. What they don't know is that their innocent bond is being percieved in the wrong light, and something ominous is brewing between Ronald and Cynthia soon after the two get acquainted by chance.

Ronald (Bobby Andrews) and Cynthia's (Jodi Sta Maria) recurring presence in their lives posed another threat and their demented desire to wreck Noel and Melanie's union triumphs this time with the prospect of cold steel bars between the newlywed couple.

This deadly game of deception, however gets out of hand leaving everyone connected to Cynthia and Ronald stupefied and shaken by the scandal. Seeking redemption and another chance at life, Noel files divorce and Melanie (Claudine Baretto) files an annulment case, inciting a start of another difficult battle as their respective spouses device ways to prove that Noel and Melanie would have to suffer before they can even attempt at pursuing sweet freedom.

Years lapse into painful memories as Noel (Piolo Pascual) and Melanie (Claudine Baretto) fight to make their marriage work with only the prison as their venue to get together. Justice finally comes sweet though late- Melanie is vindicated but Cynthia (Jodi Sta. Maria) had raised Noel and Melanie's son Ernest, as her own. What is supposed to be joyous homecoming for Melanie actually ignites new conflicts. Their son recognizes Cynthia as his mother and refuses to warm up to his real parents. Cynthia, on the other hand, is not willing to enlighten Ernest unless Noel gives in to her whims. Will love suffice and pave the way for forgiveness and finally bring peace in the lives of Noel and Melanie? Their hope lies on Cynthia whose sanity is hanging by a thread.
